The London Logs: My Birthday! & Globe Theatre Tips

Finally, today I was allowed to open the birthday gift left by Emiko and Stephen (the owners of the home I am watching this summer). It’s a book on the history of the River Thames!london-bridge-wolympic-rings.jpg After yesterday’s riverside excursion, my curiosity was piqued about what John Burns called England’s “liquid history.” Perfect gift!

globe-theatre-thames.jpgI treated myself to a performance of “The Taming of the Shrew” at the Globe Theatre. Fun performance! I sat in the middle balcony, second row, and felt bad for the folks in the front rows of all the tiers. As the sun moved, audience members were stuck baking in the heat. I was glad I had a fan with me – given to me a year ago today at my 50th birthday by a friend who predicted hot flashes.

I’ll be back at the Globe next month for a performance of Richard III and I intend to get a “groundling” ticket to Henry V for £5 (about $7.50US). Groundlings stand in the “pit” for the whole performance and the first lucky few stand with their elbows propped on stage. Performers enter and exit through the standing crowd. It was a perfect birthday. I treated myself to a Greek dinner at a café overlooking the Millenium Bridge and St. Paul’s Cathedral and got some major writing done on a new book chapter. st-pauls-church-rooftop.jpgThis was the first birthday I’ve spent alone and I wasn’t sure how this would compare with last year’s 65-person blowout party with the live band. But, I am enjoying my solitude. I like being surrounded by people speaking all languages so I can concentrate on my own thoughts!
