The London Logs: Butterflying

OK, for you butterfly fans, we’ll let the pictures do the talking. butterfly1.jpgThe UK’s largest butterfly sanctuary is in Stratford-upon-Avon (www.butterflyfarm.co.uk), home to more than 250 species with a side room housing weird insects, spiders and scorpions. butterflyboy.jpgOne might imagine I’ve had my share of scorpions living in Mexico, but these babies were large enough to pay rent. The infrared one is about 6” long! Entrance: £6.25/adult, £5.25/children.

I was hoping that visiting this sanctuary would crack loose a great inspiration about the chapter I am currently working on: “Butterflying,” about a 6-year-old Filipina who died prematurely from leukemia, most likely due to the toxics the US left behind when we closed Clark and Subic military bases. She liked to draw colorful butterflies. I’m playing with the theme of “home” – returning home, both in the physical and in the spiritual senses – and plan to include Monarchs’ migration. The annual migration is too long for one butterfly; up to 4 generations make the annual trip. Scientists suspect the migration course is embedded in the Monarch’s DNA.

No insight forthcame. Leave your thoughts!
